Chris Musgrave

Sports Business Strategist & Author

Strategy, research, and investment focused on the global soccer economy. Currently writing a book on the business of Major League Soccer.

Chris Musgrave is a strategy executive, writer, and investor focused on the economics and structure of professional sports. He is currently writing a book on the business of Major League Soccer, launching a sports business publication, and building an independent practice at the intersection of sports strategy, research, and investment.

He brings over thirteen years of experience in strategy consulting and investment banking, most recently as a Strategy Director at Accenture, where he helped build a strategy practice to $70M in annual revenue across the sport, technology, energy, and financial services sectors. His work has spanned growth strategy, market entry, business model design, M&A, commercial optimization, and AI-enabled transformation for Fortune 500 and growth-stage organizations. Prior to consulting, he worked in investment banking at J.P. Morgan in London.

Chris grew up playing competitive football in England, competing at semi-professional level and captaining his university team. That firsthand experience of the game — its culture, its competitive structures, and the dynamics between grassroots and professional football — shapes his analytical perspective on the business of soccer in North America.

He holds a Master’s in Finance (Distinction, top 2%), an Investment Management Certificate from the CFA Institute, and a BA in Economics and Sport. He has served on the board of a California nonprofit as an Executive Committee member and is a Board Officer of an SCGA-registered golf club.

The American Soccer Revolution

(Working Title)

Forthcoming (2026)

A book examining how Major League Soccer evolved from a fragile experiment in the 1990s into one of the fastest-expanding sports businesses in the world. It traces the consequential decisions — around ownership structure, stadium strategy, media partnerships, expansion economics, and the arrival of global stars from David Beckham to Lionel Messi — that reshaped the league’s trajectory and transformed the prospects for professional soccer in North America.

Drawing on interviews with executives, club leaders, and industry insiders, the book combines narrative with rigorous analysis of the structural forces behind MLS’s growth — and looks ahead to the next phase of the league’s development in the aftermath of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
